Lifeguards were a beacon of hope on Wasaga Beach

John Watt saved lives during the day and partied like an animal at night. But that was 1969, when Watt was a professional lifeguard at Wasaga Beach.

Now, “No lifeguard” signs are plastered everywhere along the 14-km beach on Georgian Bay.

The province began phasing out the lifeguard program at its public beaches in 1986 and lifeguards left Wasaga in 1996. Waterfront safety patrols replaced the lifeguards, which Watt says is inadequate.
